Inspirational Quotes

Mandy had four inspirational quotes about travel for you today. Only one problem – she’s forgotten two of them. Rather kills the flow of the story doesn’t it?

Anyway, the two she can remember are:

“The World Is a Book and Those Who Do Not Travel Read Only One Page” – St Augustine

“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill

She tells me that they were written on the wall of the Sarajevo bus station, but I was trying to figure our how to buy a random ticket for 4 Marks and missed them. I’m guessing that the other two were:

“The journey not the arrival matters.” – T.S. Eliot

“To go, or not to go. That is the question.” – Shakespeare

Anyway, we aren’t in Sarajevo, we are in Dubrovnik. We’ve called a lay day, not by design really, it just happened. We needed to wash some clothes, and the machine took hours. While that was happening, we found that the AFL finals were on, and proceeded to watch the Swans get absolutely walloped. By then it was almost lunch time, and Mandy needed therapy, and …. well you get the drift.

Later in the afternoon we did manage a walk around the part of the Lapad peninsula and past Sunset Beach, though the sun was still high in the sky.

Tonight is Gruska Noc (Gruz Night), and since Gruz is the suburb that we are staying in, we are right in the middle of it. Not sure what it’s purpose is. Probably it’s main purpose is to extract the tourist dollar, but they have set stalls and tables all down the main road, and have been diligently cooking lambs on the spit since early this morning. Now, when I say lambs on a spit, I don’t just mean the odd one like we’d see at home. No. This is on an industrial scale. They cook them on spit beds that take a dozen at a time, and there are vendors all the way down the road.

Seems that they sell the meat by the kilo on pieces of paper to the locals and visitors, who seem to scoff it down with their hands at the nearby tables. Didn’t get to try any, as it seemed that they treated anybody who wanted to buy less than a kilogram as though they had leprosy. Did enjoy the atmosphere though, and the live music which could be heard from inside our apartment. Given that it kicks off at 9pm, and the ouzo kicks in thereafter, it’s going to be a late night.
