Goodbye To Yugoslavia

A good day to leave our visit of the former countries of Yugoslavia. When we went for our evening walk last night, the Dubrovnik port was quiet and there were no cruise ships in the town. When we go up this morning there were five! Madness everywhere.

Walked down to the bus station and caught the official airport shuttle. Just as well we got on at the first stop, as by halfway they were telling people they’d just have to wait for the next bus as we were full.

Nice, newish airport in Dubrovnik. Quite impressive. Lots of roadworks going on outside as they are in the process of adding an extra runway to enable large planes to visit. And there’s the rub – they have built a lovely airport terminal that’s uncrowded and everybody moves through fast, in order to build runway facilities for huge planes to arrive and gum everything up like every other airport in the world. Oh well.

Our plane didn’t leave till 2pm, and it was a little prop engine Embraer that only seats 70. Funniest sight was the Seattle Supersonics basketball player folding himself into his seat, wrapping his legs around his ears and into the pocket of the person in front of him, all so his equally tall wife could try to squash into her seat.

Thought that Athens airport would be chaos (a stereotype I know), but it wasn’t. Everything was quick and smooth, and we were soon on the Metro into the city. Found our apartment with no problems – a 2 bedroom apartment in anticipation of Brendan and Rachel arriving Saturday – and had a lovely tea in a taverna in nearby Dracon Street. Lovely apartment, washing machine, dishwasher, but no kettle. How odd.
