The twice weekly train arrived at lunchtime, and gave the ‘Over 50s’ tour group a chance to stretch their legs and look at the nearby Tree of Knowledge. Most of them looked like over 70s!

Also outside the station was the Big Marimba – a playable instrument concreted into the ground.…

Celebrating Mandy’s Birthday in Barcaldine

Drove to Barcaldine for the weekend to celebrate Mandy’s birthday.

Barcaldine is a lovely town, principally known for it’s role in the 1891 uprising known as the Shearers Strike, one of only two armed insurrections in Australia, Eureka being the other.

Most of the key events took place under the ‘tree of knowledge’ in the main street, and led to the formation of the Australian Labour Party, later changed to Labor, and the election to parliament of the first ‘worker’.…

Visited The Longreach Show

The Longreach Show is a one-day show these days, but very good. Margie, the matriarch of the family we were staying with, is the President of the Show Society, and wandered around in her glad rags all day.

Saw the pavilions, sampled the wares, examined the local displays, and watched the horsemanship.

Highlight was probably the dog high jump. The winner, for the second year in a row, was a dog that cleared 3.21 metres from a running start. That’s 3.21 metres. Put it this way, if it were possible for Mandy to stand on my shoulders, the dog would still clear us!…
