Rockhampton Botanical Gardens and Zoo

Did a big walk across town to the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens. Lovely park, with a terrific Japanese Gardens and a tropical fruit tree section which was rather unique.

After lunch at the cafe, and a walk around some of the lake, we headed off to the adjacent Rockhampton Zoo, which was not only well designed but, as a bonus, free. Saw a few things that you don’t commonly come across – some very awake wombats, some koalas on the move, a lyrebird, and a pair of cassowaries.…

Emu Park and Yeppoon

Went for the Capricorn Coast tourist drive today which is a loop from Rockhampton through Emu Park and Yeppoon and back to Rocky.

Morning tea at the Singing Ship and ANZAC Walk in Emu Park, then on to Yeppoon for lunch and a long walk along the beach at low tide.

Tea of fish and chips on the foreshore as it got dark.…

Had tea at a lovely Italian restaurant near the hotel we stayed at. …

OK, It’s Now Officially Cold

Within a couple of days, Winter has decended.

The days are still lovely, but the nights are now down between 1 and 4 degrees. The thick doona has come out, the slippers are on, and the heater in the caravan has been turned on first and last thing.

Enjoyed the warmth of the fireplace at the Big House when we had dinner there late last week, and we all huddled around a fire outside last night.…

The Big House

Zoe’s parents recently completed a new rammed-earth house on the property, a couple of paddocks away from where they used to live – which is where Deon and Zoe are building their new house, and the schoolhouse is situated.

Today Winter arrived. Where last week we have open windows to vent the caravan, and air-con in the middle of ther day to cool us down, it’s now 8C when we get up, and the heater is on in the mornings and evenings. It’s changed so quickly, and we’ve donned jumpers for the first time in 12 months.

Enjoyed dinner at the big house last night, sitting around the log fire feeling very cozy.…

Jericho
Jericho

Jericho

Jericho is a small town east of Longreach, named Jericho because it’s on the banks of the Jordan River (boom boom).

It came into existence as a railway stop on the Rockhampton to Longreach railway, but these days only boasts a postal agency, and a pub which will order you bread and milk twice a week.

However, it’s home to Australia’s smallest drive-in, which is built on a house block, and operates once a month.…
