‘The north wind is tossing the trees, the red dust is over the town ….’ How many of you remember singing that at Christmas? I’ve now met some people who can identify with those words, but as a kid it was nothing like the kind of Christmas I had (but then again neither was ‘Let It Snow, Let It Snow’). However, it’s pretty apt for here. It’s the time of the year in Mykonos when the north wind just blows, and blows hard. Gave us a rough passage yesterday, and pulled the bikinis off lots of the folks on the Mykonos beach today. At least I’m pretty sure that was the cause.
Hats were flying, sunglasses came off, dust and sand got in your eyes. I did a fair ‘Eddie the Eagle’ impersonation at one stage on the waterfront. But on the up side, the windsurfers on the harbour were seriously impressive. The wind was too strong to stop and come about at the end of a leg, so they used the wave to launch themselves in the air, and do a full twist with one and a half somersaults in the pike position, landing facing the opposite direction, and off they went without stopping. Not for the faint of heart.
Walked down to Ornos Beach after a huge breakfast, and spend the morning swimming in the sheltered beach, before walking back again for lunch.
Then off the other way in the afternoon, pretty much into the teeth of the gale, all the way down to the Mykonos Old Town. Yep, it’s just like the postcards. Pity them if they ever run out of white and blue paint at Bunnings. Saw the old windmills, though the sails were all taken down due to the wind, some of the old churches, and just the odd hundred shops selling blue and white striped beach gear.
Tea in a Greek restaurant to sample the lamb. Surprisingly, it doesn’t feature highly on the restaurant menus. Not bad when it did arrive, but really it wasn’t anything to write home about (oops, I just did). Much nicer lamb at home. We are certainly spoilt.
